A variety of instruments such as grasping forceps, retrieval baskets or loops may be used to retrieve foreign bodies, dependent upon the type of object involved. Also, other devices can be useful for foreign body removal. A balloon catheter can be used to pull the foreign body into larger bronchi before grasping it. Surgical scissors may help retrieving by cutting foreign objects like food obstructions.
Selection of the appropriate instrument will minimise any risk of the foreign object being released prematurely and causing further trauma. Olympus devices offer superb grasping power for reliable and safe extraction. The devices are also available for 1.2 mm biopsy channels for peripheral and paediatric foreign body removal.
